The 57th edition of the Nuevo León Cup Luciano Ramírez Gallardo took place at the Centro Deportivo Borregos track, in the Estadio Azul ITESM in Monterrey, Nuevo León. This prestigious event brought together top athletes and offered a $100,000 MXN prize pool for those who broke existing records.
This year, three records were surpassed: Miriam Sánchez Tapia set a new record in the women’s 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.61 and in the 200-meter sprint with 23.62, while Samantha Amador set a new record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 56.56. Both athletes represent the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP), reinforcing their institution as a powerhouse of athletic talent.

For 20-year-old Miriam Sánchez Tapia, the road to victory has been a process of intense training and discipline. “I had a great general preparation phase, very exhausting, but the results are there,” said the athlete after her outstanding performance. From the semifinals, Sánchez Tapia had already reached her goal of breaking the record, which motivated her to push even further in the final. “I knew I could do it; it was my goal from the start,” she stated.
The athlete acknowledged that the real challenge now is to maintain and improve her times, but she trusts that her training process will help her achieve her next objectives. One of her main goals is to reach a time of 11.40 in the 100-meter sprint, which would qualify her for the Pan American Junior rankings.
In addition to her sports career, Sánchez Tapia is also studying Nutrition at UDLAP, which requires her to balance both academics and athletics. “Sports teach you discipline, and that helps you organize your time between school and training. You have to make sacrifices, but in the end, it's all worth it,” she emphasized.

On the other side, Luciano Ramírez Gallardo, who led the Asociación de Atletismo del Estado de Nuevo León A.C. for 26 years, is a key figure in organizing this event. Known as "The Godfather" for his relentless support of athletes, he highlighted the competition's growth and the constant effort to improve each edition. “As organizers, we always aim to surpass what we did in the previous event, just as athletes strive to improve their times,” he said.
Ramírez Gallardo also emphasized what it means to him that the event carries his name, calling it "a great tribute" to his years of dedication to the sport. “The board of directors saw fit to grant me this, for me, wonderful tribute in life for the time I have dedicated to athletics. Thanks to the work of securing sponsorships and everything surrounding this event, we have taken it to this level. The prize pool has turned it into an international event, and this recognition means a lot after years of work,” he expressed.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of the event being sanctioned by the Mexican Athletics Federation and World Athletics, ensuring that the records set here can be considered for national and international competitions.
Miriam Sánchez Tapia shared a message for aspiring athletes, especially those striving to balance their academic and athletic careers: “Don’t get discouraged. Sometimes it feels like there’s no progress, but everything is a process, and it’s not always linear. The sacrifices you make today will pay off tomorrow.”
The 57th Nuevo León Cup Luciano Ramírez Gallardo once again proved why it is one of Mexico’s most important athletics events. With record-breaking performances, a high level of competition, and solid organizational support, this edition reaffirmed its commitment to sports development and the promotion of new talent.
