The 2025 Winter Track and Field Championship in Mérida, Yucatán, witnessed outstanding achievements in athletics, where athletes Iris Morales and Radel Morales shined in their respective events. With their sights set on the World University Championship and, in Radel’s case, the Junior Pan American Championship of World Athletics, both competitors showcased their skill and set significant marks on the track of Estadio Salvador Alvarado.
The event, which has been held for more than a decade, saw remarkable participation this year. The organizer, Professor Miriam Canul, highlighted the importance of providing athletes with optimal conditions for their performance, ensuring hydration, well-maintained facilities, and certification from World Athletics and the Mexican Athletics Federation.

Iris Morales, 23, returned to compete in this championship after making history in the previous edition by breaking records in the 400m and 800m flat races in the women's open category. This year, her goal was to improve her times and continue preparing for the World University Championship.
Her performance secured her first place in the 400 meters and second place in the 800 meters, solidifying her position as one of the top athletes in her category.
Meanwhile, Radel Morales, 21, arrived under the pressure of securing her qualification for the Junior Pan American Games of World Athletics, a goal already within reach but one that she must confirm with her marks. Her performance at the Winter Championship was outstanding: she won first place in the 800 meters and second place in the 400 meters.
A highlight of the event was that she managed to break the record set by her own sister in the previous edition in the 800 meters. "It's an honor. I know the record belonged to my sister. We ran together, so it was a great experience for both of us," she expressed.

Regarding the importance of the Winter Championship, Professor Miriam Canul explained that this event allows competitors' marks and times to be validated through a photo-finish system certified by national and international organizations. This ensures that the results obtained in the competition are officially recognized, a key aspect for athletes seeking qualification for higher-level tournaments.
Finally, Iris Morales shared a message for aspiring athletes: "Do not get discouraged if you are just starting because there will probably be many times when you feel like you are not improving or become disheartened by not winning, but everything is a process, and it is not always linear. Keep your spirits high."
Similarly, Radel Morales encouraged young athletes to trust in their training: "Train very hard, and when you are on the track, forget about fear, nerves, and run with everything you have."
Since 2018, Radel Morales has been a finalist in the 800 meters at the CONADE Nationals, an achievement that marked the beginning of her competitive rise. In 2022, she was crowned champion of the 800 meters in the Juvenile C category of the National CONADEIP, and in 2023, she won third place in the Nuevo León Cup in the same event.
Her performance also earned her qualification for the 2024 First Force Championship and pre-selection for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games, solidifying her path toward elite athletics.
The 2025 Winter Track and Field Championship left its mark with new records and high-level competition, establishing itself as a key event for the development of athletics in Mexico and the advancement of athletes toward international competitions.
